Cet ouvrage se penche sur un type spécifique de politiques migratoires, celui du regroupement familial. Ce dernier représente non seulement la principale porte d’entrée légale en Belgique et en Europe, mais a également un impact non négligeable sur la vie des immigrés : elle définit les membres de famille autorisés à vivre ensemble et à quelles conditions.
Sur la base d’une étude de terrain de longue haleine à l’Office des étrangers, cet ouvrage étudie le travail quotidien des fonctionnaires en charge des dossiers de regroupement familial. Celui-ci dépasse le strict examen légal des dossiers : il mobilise des processus de catégorisation des familles, certaines qualifiées d’« indésirables », et de justification en droit
de leur « indésirabilité ».
