Frederick van der Ploeg received his Ph.D. in Economics at King's College and the University of Cambridge in 1981. He is currently Professor of Economics at the University of Oxford, where he is also Research Director of the Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies (OxCarre) and Fellow of New College. He is also Adjunct Professor of Political Economy at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Previously he has worked on the staff of the University of Cambridge, the London School of Economics, Tilburg University and the European University Institute in Florence. He was also a Member of Parliament and State Secretary of Education, Culture and Science for the Netherlands during the period 1998-2002.
His research interests are in macroeconomics, development economics, resource and environmental economics and public finance, but also the development of the welfare state, higher education reform and the economics of art and culture.
